Grimm Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Washington University, St. Louis, USA {rjb1, cmg}@cse.wustl.edu Abstract We introduce a novel concept called perceptually meaningful image editing and present techniques for manipulating the apparent depth of objects and creating the illusion of motion in 2D images. Our techniques combine principles of human visual perception with approaches developed by traditional artists. For our depth manipulation technique, the user loads an image, selects an object and specifies whether the object should appear closer or further away. The system automatically determines luminance or color temperature target values for the object and/or background that achieve the desired depth change. Our approach for creating the illusion of motion exploits the differences between our peripheral vision and our foveal vision by introducing spatial imprecision to the image.

Perceptually Meaningful Image Editing: Depth
We introduce the concept of perceptually meaningful image editing and present two techniques for manipulating the apparent depth of objects in an image. متن کاملمدلسازی صفحهای محیطهای داخلی با استفاده از تصاویر RGB-D
In robotic applications and especially 3D map generation of indoor environments, analyzing RGB-D images have become a key problem. The mapping problem is one of the most important problems in creating autonomous mobile robots. Autonomous mobile robots are used in mine excavation, rescue missions in collapsed buildings and even planets’ exploration. Furthermore, indoor mapping is beneficial in f...
متن کاملUnconscious adaptation: a new illusion of depth induced by stimulus features without depth
Here, we show a new illusion of depth induced by psychophysical adaptation to dynamic random-dot stereograms (RDS) that are interocularly anticorrelated (i.e., in which the images for the two eyes have reversed contrast polarity with each other). After prolonged viewing of anticorrelated RDS, the presentation of uncorrelated RDS (i.e., in which two images are mutually independent random-dot pat...
متن کاملPlanelet Transform: A New Geometrical Wavelet for Compression of Kinect-like Depth Images
With the advent of cheap indoor RGB-D sensors, proper representation of piecewise planar depth images is crucial toward an effective compression method. Although there exist geometrical wavelets for optimal representation of piecewise constant and piecewise linear images (i.e. wedgelets and platelets), an adaptation to piecewise linear fractional functions which correspond to depth variation ov...
متن کاملAnomalous Motion Illusion Contributes to Visual Preference
This study investigated the relationship between the magnitude of illusory motion in the variants of the "Rotating Snakes" pattern and the visual preference among such patterns. In Experiment 1 we manipulated the outer contour and the internal geometrical structure of the figure to test for corresponding modulations in the perceived illusion magnitude. The strength of illusory motion was estima...
